The Anchor hosts both intermediate and advanced WSET courses in the renovated flint barn. These courses are run in association with Helen Duddridge of Duddridge Wine Associates.
An intermediate qualification carried out over 9 x 2 hour sessions with the multiple-choice examination in the 10th week. The course provides product knowledge for those in the drinks and hospitality industries who have a little previous knowledge. It is also for those with a keen interest and who are not employed in the drinks trade and wish to educate themselves in a structured manner. The programme deals with grape growing and wine making, major wine and spirit producing regions, key grape varieties, sparkling and sweet wines plus fortified wines and spirits. Wine tasting is part of every class. Homework is given to supplement required study.
An advanced qualification carried out over 17 x 2½ hour sessions with an examination in the 18th week. The exam consists of a tasting exam, multiple choice and short answer papers. The course covers wines and spirits of the world in depth and is open to those who hold the Intermediate Certificate or those who have sufficient experience and knowledge gained in the wine and spirit industry. In-depth wine tasting forms part of every class and homework is given each week, along with weekly tests, to supplement the required home study.
Tutor, Helen Duddridge, gained expertise over many years spent in the hospitality business and particularly in the wine retail trade where she enjoyed selling fine wines to many “styles” of customers as well as training and establishing retail teams. Educational and buying trips to wineries around the world reinforced qualifications gained at the Wine and Spirit Education Trust. Intent upon pursuing an independent teaching and training role Helen gained adult teaching qualifications.
She is a member of the Association of Wine Educators and a recommended tutor and approved programme provider for the Wine and Spirit Education Trust (WSET).
